SPIRIT OF THE FOREST
The "Spirit" bear or "Kermodei" is an endangered species that lives in the West Coast rain forest of British Columbia. Not a Polar Bear, nor an Albino, this gentle bear is the product of two black bears who have offsetting genes and who, most times, produce litters consisting of black or brown cubs and occasionally a "Spirit".
It has been estimated that there are only some 400 of these bears in existence in the Princess Royal Island, Terrace, and Prince Rupert areas of B.C. and they are severely threatened by the continuing "clear-cut" logging and mining activities in their forests.
Working in soft and hard pastels, Jacquie has managed to capture the loneliness of one these wonderful creatures as he traverses a moss-covered log in search of his favourite food, salmon. The deep green of the rain forest is captured in the reflection of the water and somewhat on the rocks.
This is truly a masterpiece which would make a wonderful addition to the walls of a family room, a child’s room, or a cottage.
