"Mandarin Charm"

The Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) is a legendary symbol of interpersonal respect, kindness, and marital fidelity.

The Mandarin was known and revered in Asia well before the birth of Christ. Westerners were quick to discover it when they began to visit those areas of the world and captive Mandarins were brought to Europe as early as the 1700’s.

By the 1800’s, there was at least one resident wild flock of Mandarins thriving in the UK and there is presently at least one feral flock of Mandies in residence in the western U.S. that coexists well with the local population of Wood Ducks.

In the wild, Mandarins can be found in China, Korea, Japan and eastern Siberia. They have rather sharp, long claws enabling them to live effectively in a forest environment and climb on and nest inside tree cavities.
